U.S. Senate candidate George Allen (R) held a roundtable discussion concerning the economy on Monday morning in Old Town.
U.S. Senate candidate George Allen (R) visited the Old Town law offices of Mark Allen on Monday morning for a roundtable discussion with local business owners. The group, which represented real estate, banking and retail services industries among others, expressed concerns over government regulations, including the President’s federal health care tax law. Many said the regulations have substantially limited their businesses. “This year, we did cut back,” said Adnan Hamidi, owner of Alexandria Cupcake on King Street. “And what we cut back on was advertising. … The uncertainty of the economy is scaring a lot of small business owners.” Hamidi, who also owns a kitchen cabinet business, said increased insurance premiums and tough mandates have …

The two U.S. Senate candidates talked about sequestration and the economy in McLean Thursday.
MCLEAN — The potential $500 billion in defense cuts looming in Washington took center stage Thursday at the Capital One Conference Center during the first of three debates between U.S. Senate candidates Tim Kaine and George Allen. The cuts — $1 trillion in total under the banner of "sequestration" — could cost the Old Dominion thousands of jobs, particularly in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads. Once meant as a stopgap measure, the continuing partisan divide in Washington has transformed them into a real threat. Kaine, a Democrat and former governor, presented his plan to solve the problem, which largely revolves around ending Bush-era tax cuts to individuals making more than $500,000 annually and cutting subsidies to the five largest …

At Democratic National Convention, U.S. Senate candidate says voters face 'stark choice' at the polls.
Addressing a crowd Tuesday at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine said there is a "stark choice" between Republican and Democratic leaders seeking election this November: those who want to push ideology and "wedge issues," and the latter, who have set goals and achieved them during their terms. First using Virginia – which he called a purple state – as an example, Kaine rallied a convention hall full of delegates with Democratic success stories and Republican blunders. “You know, a few years ago, very few imagined that Virginia would be a battleground state,” said Kaine, a former Virginia governor who is in a dead heat with fellow former Gov. George Allen in a race for the U.S. Senate. “…
The U.S. Senate candidate will speak between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine will deliver a speech at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday night. The former Virginia governor is scheduled to speak before the delegation in Charlotte, NC sometime between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., according to his campaign. Kaine, who chaired the Democratic National Committee from January 2009 until April 2011, “expected to draw a sharp contrast between the visions of Democrats and of Republicans in this year's election,” the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports. During an address to Virginia’s convention delegation this morning, Kaine said his speech would also focus on how Virginia went from a typically red state during presidential elections to voting blue during the 2008 election, according to the …

U.S. Senate candidate takes walking tour of Arlandria, talks economy with Hispanic business leaders.
U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine (D) spent much of Thursday in Alexandria meeting with Hispanic business owners as part of a Latino voter outreach ahead of the November election. In the morning, the former Virginia governor participated in a roundtable discussion with Latino business leaders at SBG Technology Solutions near Braddock Road Metro station. SBG is a defense contractor owned by Carlos Del Toro, a service-disabled veteran. Kaine then took a walking tour of Arlandria, making stops at Marcela’s Bakery, El Pulgarcito and Beatriz Hair Salon and Academy. He was escorted by Juan Nelson Zavaleta, president of the Arlandria-Chirilagua Business Association, and joined by State Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-30th) and Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille. “The…

McLean, Arlington and Alexandria ZIP codes among biggest donors; Allen's latest donation figures not yet released.
The Virginia Senate race, often touted by some political analysts as one of the most expensive in the country, is living up to its reputation. The Senate campaign for the Democratic nominee, former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, raised $3 million from April 1-June 30, the campaign reported Wednesday morning. Kaine faces Republican nominee, former senator and former Gov. George Allen on the ballot in November. More than 70 percent of the $3 million came from donors who gave less than $200, the Kaine campaign noted in its press release. In all, the campaign has raised $10.4 million from 27,000 donors, has $2.7 million on hand and has spent $3.5 million on fall advertising. The latest figures from the Federal Election Commission show that the Allen…

High Court ruled 5-4 today to uphold what some call 'Obamacare.'
Area leaders were quick to react today to the news that the Supreme Court upheld President Barack Obama's health reform law. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R): "Today's Supreme Court ruling is extremely disappointing for Virginia and for America. The PPACA will create a costly and cumbersome system that will impair our country's ability to recover from these challenging economic times, infringes on our citizen's liberties, will harm small businesses, and will impose dramatic unfunded mandates on Virginia and all states. Simply put, this is a blow to freedom. America needs market-based solutions that give patients more choice, not less." (For the governor's full statement, visit his Web site.) On his Twitter feed, the governor wrote: "Simply …

Two are vying for U.S. Senate seat.
Not wasting any time, the campaign for Tim Kaine, the former Virginia governor running for the U.S. Senate, has released a schedule of debates Kaine has accepted in a race against his Republican opponent George Allen. Allen, the former senator and governor, won Tuesday's GOP primary against three contenders and celebrated his win with his family in Richmond Tuesday night. The general election is Nov. 6. Political experts agree that Virginia will be a battleground state in both the presidential election and the Senate election. “The stakes in this election are extremely high and all Virginians deserve an opportunity to hear directly from the candidates on issues of regional, state, and national importance,” said Kaine for Virginia …
