Titans Fall to South County 35-13

Titans battle turnovers, soggy field conditions in loss.

Relentless rain postponed seven Northern Virginia football games Friday evening, but South County officials decided to brave the elements and play on against T.C. Williams. For 48 soggy minutes, players from both teams struggled to gain traction on South County’s grass field. In the end, first-year coach Gerry Pannoni's Stallions earned their first win of the season, defeating T.C. Williams 35-13. Failure to establish the running game and three lost fumbles contributed to the Titans’ defeat. T.C. Williams fell to 1-3 on the season. The Titans haven't won since their Sept. 1 season opener, a 51-7 victory over Wakefield. With dismal field conditions, both teams relied heavily on the ground game. T.C. Williams Runs Through Wakefield 51-7

Titans score three times on special teams in rout of the Warriors.

With junior quarterback Alec Grosser and senior running back ZaQuan Summers in the lineup, Titans football coach Dennis Randolph expects the T.C. Williams offense to be able to score some points this season. But when the Titans tallied three times on special teams—including two kickoff returns for scores—in the Titans' 51-7 road victory over Wakefield Thursday night, Randolph was pleasantly surprised. “They were awesome,” Randolph said. “We knew they couldn’t kick it very deep, and we created a mismatch of speed.” That mismatch was exploited on the opening kickoff when Mohamed Sesay fielded a short kick and returned it 70 yards for an the early 7-0 lead. “Last year, we didn’t score a TD on special teams,” Randolph said. “Rodney Johnson, …

Titans Hope to Take the Next Step

Behind Grosser and Summers, T.C. Williams is gunning for the school's first postseason appearance since 1990.

As the T.C. Williams football team walked off the field last November after a decisive victory over Robert E. Lee for its sixth win of the 2010 season, coach Dennis Randolph was hoping his team had advanced to the region playoffs for the first time in 20 years.    The win, which clinched the Titans’ first winning season since 1995, was not enough. A combination of wins and losses by other teams around the region that night left the Titans on the outside of the playoffs once again. “Sometimes you work really hard and you come up a little bit short,” Randolph said. “I think that has left a bitter pill in their mouth. They want to get over that hump and get to that next level.”  Since practice for the 2011 season began in early August, it’s …
