Alexandria Prepares for Unprecedented November Ballot

On the Nov. 6 ballot, Alexandrians will see party affiliations for national seats, but not for City Council and mayor.

The ballot for the Nov. 6 election is as special for what is listed on it as what is not—party affiliations for Alexandria’s City Council and mayoral candidates. While Alexandria’s lengthy ballot will show party affiliations for the national races, local races will not. Additionally, thanks to the state draw selecting party order on the ballot, in Alexandria, Republicans will be listed first, followed by Democrats and then Libertarians. “I think it’s great to be on top,” said Alexandria Republican City Committee Chairman Tom Fulton. “It’s a two-page ballot front and back. It’s going to be hard to get voters to fully understand all of the ballot and to get them to remember to flip it over. They have to remember there are 12 choices and they…

Romney plans to change? How can he undo two years of stupid remarks? How can he undo how he insulted London, China and Russia? How can Ryan undo his Town Hall meetings all last Spring when he told seniors he would get rid of social security and medicare because they were ponzi schemes? You can not fix stupid and you can not turn a machine into a human being. But...........you can release your tax…   more ›

ARCC Party Canvass Set for Saturday

Canvass will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Minnie Howard School.

The Alexandria Republican City Committee will hold its party canvass to nominate candidates for City Council on Saturday at the Minnie Howard School cafeteria. The canvass will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All registered voters in Alexandria may participate. Just three candidates—incumbents Frank Fannon and Alicia Hughes and newcomer Bob Wood—filed to run as Republicans on the Nov. 6 ballot. Six is the maximum number of candidates a party can run in the General Election. Because the ARCC is running fewer candidates than the maximum, the purpose of the canvass “is not to choose among our candidates, rather it is to nominate all three,” ARCC Chairman Tom Fulton said in a statement on the committee’s website. “I believe that each of these …

Alexandria GOP Will Run Three Candidates for City Council

Incumbent Alicia Hughes, who was elected as an independent candidate in 2009, files with the Alexandria Republican City Committee just before the deadline.

The Alexandria Republican City Committee will run a slate of three candidates for City Council—Frank Fannon, Alicia Hughes and Bob Wood. Thursday evening was the deadline for candidates for file with the party. “We conducted 24 interviews and at the end we have three outstanding candidates we can be very, very proud of,” ARCC Chairman Tom Fulton said Thursday at the group's monthly meeting at Minnie Howard School. “It’s all about building a brand and it’s a slow process.” Hughes, an incumbent elected as an independent three years ago, submitted her paperwork just before the deadline. “I feel at home with the Republicans in Alexandria more than anywhere else because they’re remarkably wonderful people,” Hughes said. Hughes ran as an …

Hughes, Alexandria GOP Chairman Respond to Gordon's Resignation

Alexandria Republican City Committee Chairman Tom Fulton says he has 'full faith' in the ability of Councilwoman Alicia Hughes.

Alexandria Republican City Committee Chairman Tom Fulton says Alicia Hughes is a committee member “in good standing” and admits he has “full faith in her ability” as a member of Alexandria City Council. Fulton’s remarks came in response to a statement made by former Republican council candidate Scott Gordon, who announced his resignation from the ARCC on Tuesday after dropping out of the race because of family health reasons. Gordon wrote on his website that his resignation from the ARCC was in protest to its “continued support of Alicia Hughes, who (and this is entirely my opinion and in no way representative of any attempt to provide fact) is so morally and ethically challenged, whose character is so questionable, is unfit to hold office…
