Thursday evening's GOP canvass is canceled after Tim McGhee emerges as the only Republican candidate.
Tim McGhee is the Republican candidate for the 45th House of Delegates seat, the GOP district chairman told Patch Thursday afternoon. Heath Wells said three candidates submitted candidacy paperwork, but two withdrew because of family or work conflicts. Since McGhee is the lone candidate, the Republican canvass scheduled for Thursday night is canceled. McGhee lost to Adam Ebbin in the 30th District state senate race last year. He claimed just over 35 percent of the vote. “Virginia has weathered the challenges of the recession better than most states, thanks to the leadership of Governor Bob McDonnell and others,” McGhee wrote in his statement of candidacy released Thursday. “Serious fiscal challenges lie ahead at all levels of the …

Ebbin defeated Krupicka in state senate primary last year.
Rob Krupicka picked up the endorsement of State Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-30th) on Wednesday in the race to replace David Englin as state delegate from the 45th District. Krupicka, an Alexandria City councilman and a member of the State Board of Education, lost to Ebbin in a Democratic primary for state senate one year ago this month. “[Rob] has been a steadfast ally in the fight for true equality, a world-class education system, a cleaner environment, smart transportation solutions, and innovative policies that keep our economy strong,” Ebbin wrote in an email to supporters on Wednesday morning. The announcement came on the eve of a last-minute caucus to determine the Democratic nominee. Krupicka is running against fellow Alexandria resident …

What do you think of the court's ruling?
A federal appeals court in Boston ruled Thursday that the Defense of Marriage Act — which defines marriage as between one man and one woman — is unconstitutional because it denies benefits to same-sex couples that heterosexual couples receive. The justices stayed the ruling pending an anticipated decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on this case or a similar case. The ruling applies to four New England states and Puerto Rico, which are covered by the circuit court’s jurisdiction, Bloomberg reported. According to the Huffington Post: "The court didn't rule on the law's more politically combustible provision, which said states without same-sex marriage cannot be forced to recognize gay unions performed in states where it's legal. It also wasn'…

Democrat Allison Silberberg kicked off her Alexandria City Council campaign Sunday at Los Tios.
Alexandria City Council candidate Allison Silberberg (D) picked up endorsements Sunday from three state senators from past and present at her campaign kickoff at Los Tios in Del Ray. State Sens. Dick Saslaw (D-35th) and Adam Ebbin (D-30th) threw their support behind Silberberg, as did Patsy Ticer, a former Alexandria mayor and Ebbin’s predecessor in the state house. “[Silberberg] will consider what she is going to say and what she means by what she says, and then she will say it,” Ticer said. A Dallas native, Silberberg moved to Alexandria in 1989 and has lived in Parkfairfax since 1992. She has served on Alexandria's Economic Opportunities Commission since 2004 and has been the chair of the group since 2010. During her remarks, Silberberg…

Gov. Bob McDonnell is expected to sign into law a bill that would allow state-funded private child-placement agencies the right to deny services based on their religious or moral beliefs.
Greg Greeley grew up in a large family and knew that one day he would want to start his own. "When I decided to start a family, and began reaching out to adopt, I was a single father," said Greeley, who moved to Virginia in 1987. He was in the Air Force and stationed at the Pentagon. As a single, gay man, Greeley faced many challenges before successfully navigating the state's adoption process. He started the process in 2001. A year later, after locating a progressive child-placement agency in Virginia, he adopted his first child from Ukraine. "It was a hard process and I was lucky," said Greeley, who lives in Arlington and now has a second adopted son from El Salvador. "The first question I asked each agency was, 'Do you work with single …

Transportation is popular discussion topic
Transportation and transit issues took center stage Saturday morning at a Mount Vernon town hall hosted by state lawmakers from Northern Virginia. State Sens. Toddy Puller (36th District) and Adam Ebbin (30th District), as well as Del. Scott Surovell (44th District), all Democrats, spoke before constituents during a two-hour event at the Mount Vernon Government Center. Puller said Route 1 north of Highway 235 will be widened, but the timetable is up in the air. “You will see the funding for that, I do believe, but I don’t know whether it will be in my lifetime,” she said. Puller noted that many Fort Belvoir employees are driving to the base from the south, also causing traffic back-ups toward Prince William County. Surovell noted that …

Proposals by area legislators include hike in gas tax, campaign sign clutter, giving localities right to ban smoking in parks.
Northern Virginia lawmakers will make their case for hiking gas taxes, banning smoking in parks, cutting the clutter of campaign signs and dozens of other proposals beginning at 12 Noon Wednesday, the official start of the 2012 legislative session of the General Assembly in Richmond. The three proposals are just a sampling of what lawmakers will consider during the 60-day session in the state capital. Lawmakers' first order of business may be to determine who is in charge in the Senate. Evenly divided by party, it's uncertain whether Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling can step in and serve as a tie-breaker on some votes. At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Gov. Bob McDonnell will deliver his State of the Commonwealth address. A budget shortfall …

Virginia Public Access Project releases reports of campaign finance filings.
The nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project has released preliminary reports of cash-on-hand as of Dec. 1 for recent state Senate and House campaigns. VPAP did not include information for those candidates who did not file by the Dec. 8 deadline to the State Board of Elections. The campaign for David Englin, the uncontested winner of the House election for the 45th District seat, had $49,310 cash available as of Dec. 1. Winner Adam Ebbin reported $18,542 in his Ebbin for Senate campaign account while opponents Tim McGhee reported $214 in the bank and Libby Garvey filed $1,299 for her campaign. Retiring Sen. Patsy Ticer had $36,852 cash-on-hand in her campaign coffer. A report for Rob Krupicka's Senate campaign was not listed in VPAP's …

Democratic candidates handily win City of Alexandria.
The Democratic Party cleaned up in Alexandria on Election Day. Adam Ebbin won his bid against Tim McGhee for state Senate in the 30th District with about 70 percent of the vote. Del. David Englin (D-45th), who ran uncontested, scored 93 percent of the vote with write-ins taking the remainder. Clerk of the Circuit Court Ed Semonian retained his seat in what was thought to be a close race, but ultimately he secured about 65 percent of the vote against Chris Marston. “Not often the clerk race gets this kind of attention,” Clark Mercer, chairman of the Alexandria Democratic Committee, told an attentive crowd at Los Tios restaurant in Del Ray. “Ed personifies someone who cares about his job.” Semonian, who has served as clerk for 32 years, said…

Alexandria voters slowly but steadily make their way to the polls today, Election Day,
Updated at 12:30 p.m. About 13% of the City Hall precinct's registered voters had stopped by to select candidates for state Senate, clerk of the Circuit Court and state representative. Republican Chris Marston, who is running for clerk, greeted voters outside of City Hall around lunchtime. "I'm pleased to offer voters a choice this election and a chance to make some technology improvements" to the office, he told Old Town Alexandria Patch. Around 10:30 a.m. about 289 voters had made their choices at the City Hall station along with 93 absentee ballots. That's out of a registered 2,828 for that polling station. "It's about a 10% turn out right now," said Chief Election Officer Jeff Herre, who added that he doesn't expect the polling station…
