To the Editor: On behalf of Alexandrians for a Livable City, I congratulate Allison Silberberg for her successful campaign for a Democratic Party nomination to run for City Council in November. Allison attracted a wide array of voters with her message of reasonable discourse and compromise as a part of public policy. I expect her conduct of her office (if she is elected in November) to be gracious and inclusive toward voters. I predict that she will emulate the Hon. Patsy Ticer in her public demeanor. It is also worth mentioning that in running for Council as a first time candidate, she ran near the top in the order of finish, ahead of two incumbent Council members. Dear Editor: Boyd Walker’s opponents must be getting desperate. How else can one explain the below-the-belt bit of mudslinging many Alexandria residents recently received from a newly formed political action committee (PAC) calling itself “Alexandria Democrats for Responsible Government” (Gail Gordon, Treasurer)? Every other piece of campaign literature for this primary election has been informative and positive, extolling the accomplishments and attributes of the favored candidate(s). The mailing from this new PAC, however, was a personal attack aimed directly at Mr. Walker. It set a new low for this race in attempting to discredit Mr. Walker as a serious candidate. Alexandria City Council candidate Sean Holihan says he was unaware of Danny Barefoot's donation to Alexandria Democrats for Responsible Government until after he made it.
The partner of Alexandria City Council candidate Sean Holihan donated $3,000 to Alexandria Democrats for Responsible Government, the political action committee responsible for an attack ad against candidate Boyd Walker. Holihan and Walker are two of 14 Democratic candidates in Tuesday’s primary, where voters will select six nominees for the Nov. 6 General Election. To the Editor: As a resident of Alexandria for the past 55 years, I am deeply concerned about the City's future and I applaud those City Council candidates who are seeking to maintain a livable Alexandria. Two terrific candidates -- Allison Silberberg and Boyd Walker -- as well as others endorsed by "Alexandrians for a Livable City" (Moshenberg, Peabody and Menjivar), are using their common sense to keep Alexandria family friendly. I hark back to the days when Alexandria was a city of family-friendly neighborhoods. Alexandria’s 14 Democratic candidates squared off once again shoulder-to-shoulder at the final Alexandria Democratic Committee debate before the June 12 primary. Candidates expressed concern with challenges faced by many jurisdictions in Northern Virginia—education, fiscal responsibility, transportation and traffic, density and development, infrastructure and affordable housing, among other topics. To the Editor: The first Democratic Primary for City Council candidates in living memory will draw many more voters to the polls on June 12 than the party caucus that chose Democratic candidates in the past. The opportunity to run in a primary has also attracted a herd of candidates, 14 in all. We also have three different political action committees (PACs). The one I help to lead, Alexandrians for a Livable City, believes that decisions made by the incumbent Council members and also those who served on the previous Council have not served our city well. The Alexandria Democratic Committee held the first of two City Council candidate debates Wednesday night at Francis Hammond Middle School. Bob Gibson, executive director of the Sorensen Institute at the University of Virginia, served as moderator. The rapid-fire debate format gave all 14 candidates a chance to address a variety of topics and even ask questions to each other. Co-chairman Andrew Macdonald will step away from the group as he runs for mayor. Fellow Chairman Boyd Walker earlier this year announced his intentions to resign as he runs for council.
Citizens for an Alternative Alexandria Waterfront Plan has announced new leadership and said its co-chairman, Andrew Macdonald, has stepped down from his position as he runs for the mayor’s seat, which will be decided in November. CAAWP co-founder Boyd Walker earlier this year announced he also would step aside to run for City Council. The group has elected vocal CAAWP supporters Bert Ely and Mark Mueller as co-chairmen. Alexandrian Bob Wood officially made his bid for City Council on Thursday morning, citing deep community roots, leadership and management skills, military duty and ability to renew public trust in government.
