Letter to the Editor: Alexandrians for a Livable City Congratulates Silberberg

Katy Cannady, a leader of local PAC Alexandrians for a Livable City, applauds the successes of those she endorsed and for addressing issues like affordable housing.

To the Editor: On behalf of Alexandrians for a Livable City, I congratulate Allison Silberberg for her successful campaign for a Democratic Party nomination to run for City Council in November. Allison attracted a wide array of voters with her message of reasonable discourse and compromise as a part of public policy. I expect her conduct of her office (if she is elected in November) to be gracious and inclusive toward voters. I predict that she will emulate the Hon. Patsy Ticer in her public demeanor.  It is also worth mentioning that in running for Council as a first time candidate, she ran near the top in the order of finish, ahead of two incumbent Council members. We also congratulate our other candidates, Victoria Menjivar, Sammie …

Brac is probably the reason why krupicka lost so bad on aug. 23. They take for granted that educated democrats will fall in line and salute, and vote party loyalty over common sense. They are in for a wake up call... Statistically it would be quite a stretch to interpret the June 12 results as a mandate that Euille inc. has the blessing of voters to stay the course... Perhaps someone can dissect …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Attack on Walker Sets a 'New Low'

Hugh Van Horn, a supporter of City Council candidate Boyd Walker, says Walker's opponents must be getting desperate with the current show of mudslinging.

Dear Editor: Boyd Walker’s opponents must be getting desperate. How else can one explain the below-the-belt bit of mudslinging many Alexandria residents recently received from a newly formed political action committee (PAC) calling itself “Alexandria Democrats for Responsible Government” (Gail Gordon, Treasurer)?  Every other piece of campaign literature for this primary election has been informative and positive, extolling the accomplishments and attributes of the favored candidate(s). The mailing from this new PAC, however, was a personal attack aimed directly at Mr. Walker. It set a new low for this race in attempting to discredit Mr. Walker as a serious candidate. Could it be that the special interests that have been so favored by the …

Holihan's Partner Contributed to PAC Responsible for Attack Ad

Alexandria City Council candidate Sean Holihan says he was unaware of Danny Barefoot's donation to Alexandria Democrats for Responsible Government until after he made it.

The partner of Alexandria City Council candidate Sean Holihan donated $3,000 to Alexandria Democrats for Responsible Government, the political action committee responsible for an attack ad against candidate Boyd Walker. Holihan and Walker are two of 14 Democratic candidates in Tuesday’s primary, where voters will select six nominees for the Nov. 6 General Election. Danny Barefoot told Patch he made the donation to Alexandria Democrats for Responsible Government because “as a private citizen” he agreed with the PAC’s platform, including its support of the city’s waterfront plan and for smart growth development practices in Alexandria. “Sean was not aware of my donation,” Barefoot said. Barefoot said he does not know of anyone involved in …

Updated: PAC Distributes Attack Ad Against Walker

City Council candidate Boyd Walker explains charges made against him in mailing distributed by Alexandria Democrats for Responsible Government.

2:30 p.m. Saturday update — John Chapman confirmed the removal of Gail Gordon from his campaign team in a statement released Saturday afternoon. He reiterated that he had no part in the organization of Alexandria Democrats for Responsible Government, nor the production or distribution of the attack ad targeting Boyd Walker. "I am running for City Council as a fourth generation Alexandrian to help preserve and extend the best traditions in our city, including civility and transparency in elections," Chapman wrote. "A recent mailer from a new PAC attacked another candidate in ways that are not consistent with those Alexandria traditions." Gordon was the treasurer of Chapman's campaign. Chapman told Patch on Friday he only became aware of …

Letter to the Editor: A Vote for Silberberg and Walker

Parkfairfax resident Ruth Woods says City Council candidates Allison Silberberg and Boyd Walker will help keep Alexandria family friendly.

To the Editor: As a resident of Alexandria for the past 55 years, I am deeply concerned about the City's future and I applaud those City Council candidates who are seeking to maintain a livable Alexandria. Two terrific candidates -- Allison Silberberg and Boyd Walker -- as well as others endorsed by "Alexandrians for a Livable City" (Moshenberg, Peabody and Menjivar), are using their common sense to keep Alexandria family friendly. I hark back to the days when Alexandria was a city of family-friendly neighborhoods. My husband Bob and I raised a family in Rosemont, and there was no greater place to do that -- good schools, playgrounds and parks, great neighbors and reliable city services. Boyd refers to the same experience growing up in Old…

Actually, there is a legitimate reason why people don't want to be identified: Fear. Despite all of their statements about the wonders of Democracy, those in power do not appreciate regular people fighting their pet causes and they retaliate against us "normal folk" when we become a “fly in the ointment.”   more ›

Democratic Council Candidates Offer Visions for the City

The 14 candidates debate for the last time before the June 12 primary.

Alexandria’s 14 Democratic candidates squared off once again shoulder-to-shoulder at the final Alexandria Democratic Committee debate before the June 12 primary. Candidates expressed concern with challenges faced by many jurisdictions in Northern Virginia—education, fiscal responsibility, transportation and traffic, density and development, infrastructure and affordable housing, among other topics. Sorenson Institute Executive Director Bob Gibson moderated the panel at George Washington Middle School before a packed house that spilled over into the auditorium’s balcony. Some of the questions were generated through a partnership with ACTion Alexandria, where participants could submit questions online in advance. Most candidates when asked …

Thanks Simon. When my husband and I approached Arthur Paebody at a campaign kickoff for another candidate in 2009 with a serious issue we had regarding fraud in the athletic program at TC, his response to us was "I find that sometimes if I ignore these things they tend to take care of themselves." That is Arthur Peabody's definition of constituent service - ignore your constituents until they go …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Incumbents Have Not Served the City Well

Rosemont resident Katy Cannady says the PAC Alexandrians for a Livable City has wisely endorsed five candidates, none of whom currently hold council office.

To the Editor: The first Democratic Primary for City Council candidates in living memory will draw many more voters to the polls on June 12 than the party caucus that chose Democratic candidates in the past. The opportunity to run in a primary has also attracted a herd of candidates, 14 in all. We also have three different political action committees (PACs).  The one I help to lead, Alexandrians for a Livable City, believes that decisions made by the incumbent Council members and also those who served on the previous Council have not served our city well. We have endorsed five candidates, Victoria Menjivar, Sammie Moshenberg, Arthur Peabody, Allison Silberberg and Boyd Walker. We did not bestow a sixth endorsement because only these five …

Anytime someone touts the waterfront plan as a source for "much needed revenue" I'm left wondering what has happened since 2001. My property taxes have doubled since then. Have teacher's salaries doubled? Are cops now earning twice what they did in 2001? Are city-owned vehicles twice as expensive? Does it now cost twice as much to maintain a school facility? Just how dire could things actually be…   more ›

Schools, Development Top Issues During ADC Debate

All fourteen Democratic candidates participate in the first of two forums put on by the Alexandria Democratic Committee.

The Alexandria Democratic Committee held the first of two City Council candidate debates Wednesday night at Francis Hammond Middle School. Bob Gibson, executive director of the Sorensen Institute at the University of Virginia, served as moderator. The rapid-fire debate format gave all 14 candidates a chance to address a variety of topics and even ask questions to each other. The candidates are squarring off for six nominations that will be determined June 12 in a citywide primary. Here is some of what each candidate had to say on Wednesday night: John Chapman A lifelong Alexandrian and currently a school administrator in Fairfax County, Chapman said improving the city’s education system and making positive changes in affordable housing are…

CAAWP Announces New Leadership

Co-chairman Andrew Macdonald will step away from the group as he runs for mayor. Fellow Chairman Boyd Walker earlier this year announced his intentions to resign as he runs for council.

Citizens for an Alternative Alexandria Waterfront Plan has announced new leadership and said its co-chairman, Andrew Macdonald, has stepped down from his position as he runs for the mayor’s seat, which will be decided in November. CAAWP co-founder Boyd Walker earlier this year announced he also would step aside to run for City Council. The group has elected vocal CAAWP supporters Bert Ely and Mark Mueller as co-chairmen. The group, which largely opposes the city’s plan to redevelop the waterfront, said in a statement: “In the coming months, CAAWP will be focused on raising funds to support a two-part challenge to the legality of the waterfront plan and rezoning that City Council adopted on Jan. 21.” City Council passed a plan to redevelop …

Wood Calls for New Leadership, Renewing Public Trust in Government

Alexandrian Bob Wood, a Republican, officially launches his campaign to secure a seat on City Council this November.

Alexandrian Bob Wood officially made his bid for City Council on Thursday morning, citing deep community roots, leadership and management skills, military duty and ability to renew public trust in government. Wood, a lieutenant general who spent 36 years in the military, was most recently in Alexandria’s public eye as a member of the Waterfront Plan Work Group. During his press conference in front of City Hall, Wood said he adamantly would have voted against the city’s plan to redevelop its riverside. “Alexandria has a storied history, but I’m afraid its present is unsettled and its promising future less certain,” said the 1968 T.C. Williams High School graduate. “This election in November is an important opportunity for Alexandria’s …
