Alexandria resident endorses Dana Lawhorne for re-election as sheriff and Bryan Porter for Commonwealth's Attorney.
To the editor, I would like to make all Alexandrians aware of two dedicated, home-grown candidates running for constitutional offices in Alexandria—Dana Lawhorne for Sheriff and Bryan Porter for Commonwealth’s Attorney. They represent the very best of bright, dedicated, and effective Democratic candidates, and I am pleased to support both of them. Dana Lawhorne is the incumbent Sheriff, having been elected in 2005. Dana was born and raised in Alexandria and attended our public schools. Since his graduation from T.C. Williams High School, Dana has served in public safety positions, 27 years as an Alexandria Police Officer before serving as our Sheriff for the past seven years. Witnesses during a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Alexandria General District Court offered details into the case of the Alexandria police officer who was shot in the head.
Witnesses testifying in the shooting case of officer Peter Laboy outlined a sunny, normal day that turned Feb. 27 into a surreal nightmare, leaving the Alexandria officer critically injured and police on a high-speed chase into Fairfax County. Commonwealth Assistant Attorney Bryan Porter opened the preliminary hearing Wednesday in Alexandria’s General District Court saying alleged shooter Kashif Bashir “intentionally and maliciously” shot Laboy in the head, leaving him injured and bleeding. Porter is a former officer with the Metro Transit Police and Alexandria Police Department. The case before Alexandria General District Court Judge Becky J. Bryan Porter is currently the lone candidate seeking to replace Randy Sengel, who announced last year he would not seek re-election.
Bryan Porter kicked off his campaign for Commonwealth’s Attorney on Saturday at Pork Barrel BBQ in Del Ray, receiving the endorsement of the current jobholder Randy Sengel and the support of seemingly every Democrat in Alexandria. “Bryan is an excellent trial attorney,” Sengel said. “I’m confident in his ability to lead the office. … He understands first-hand how law enforcement is never a black-and-white issue.” Sengel, first elected as Commonwealth’s Attorney in 1997, announced in December he would not seek re-election at the end of his current term. The “Reduce Gun Danger Act, “Mental Health First Aid“ proposal and “Flexible School Security Act” are designed to curb gun violence and offer protection to schools and families.
Delegate Rob Krupicka (D-45) has introduced three bills designed to curb gun violence and protect Virginia families.
