Five things to do with your child

The weather warmed up a bit this week and it's about just right for a nature hike. Here are five places you can go exploring with your child: 1. Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center, 5750 Sanger Avenue. Park in the parking lot at the nature center and take the steps down to the trail. The creek is perfect for birdwatching and looking for critters and creepy-crawly things.    2. Winkler Botanical Preserve, 5400 Roanoke Avenue, just off Beauregard Street. Enjoy a manmade lake and waterfall, trails, a stream and even a “hobbit house." 3. Mount Vernon Trail. Walk the trails that run along the Potomac River from Mount Vernon to Reagan National Airport. Here a few things you can do with your child this week, including some things to get you ready for Valentine's Day.   1. Make and Decorate Valentine's at Cafe Nicole on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. 2. Share the fun of reading and support the Cora Kelly Elementary School PTA by attending the Cora Kelly Book Fair Open House on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. 3. On Saturday, Hooray for Books! is holding a Valentine workshop with Sharon Hickey, author of "Card Auntie's Wonderful Workshop." This event is in conjunction with Operation Write Home, where you and your child can make Valentine's cards to send to soldiers overseas.  4. Five things to do with your child this week

Looking for something to do during these cold winter days? Here are five things you can do you with your child this coming week:    1. Story time at Bellies and Babies every Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. It's free! 2. Have you visited the Soft Playroom at Chinquapin Recreation Center? There are two ways to enjoy this recreation center with young children: The Soft Playroom is designed for preschool children ages 5 and younger. It's open every day from 9 a.m. until a half-hour before the center closes. Parents, caregivers and their children can share play areas filled with soft toys and activities. Cost is $4 per child per half hour. Chaperones are free. The Drop-in Gym is for children ages 4 to 6 years old and is open Monday through …
