Letter to the Editor: Krupicka on Treating Mental Illness

Del. Rob Krupicka says the community, state and country need to face the issues of treating mental illness head-on.

To the editor: We read about the tragic results of untreated mental illness everyday. The mass shootings at Newtown, Tucson, Aurora and Virginia Tech were all perpetuated by students or young people with reported mental health issues. The effects of mental illness are not always so high profile—most people with mental illness are non-violent—but for the one in 17 Americans living with a serious mental illness, the consequences are significant. Our youth are particularly hard hit. Mental illness frequently strikes when people are young. The consequences can be devastating. Suicide is the third-leading cause of death for people ages 10-24. More than 90 percent of those who commit suicide have a diagnosable mental disorder.  The U.S. Surgeon …

Lee Center event will include a discussion of mental health first aid services for children.

Del. Rob Krupicka is cosponsoring a forum concerning children and mental health issues on May 18 at the Nannie Lee Center, located at 1108 Jefferson St. in South Old Town. The event will include an overview of recently approved legislation dealing with mental health services, a panel discussion concerning a new program providing education for parents and those who work with children on mental health first aid, and a discussion of available mental health services through local community service boards. Krupicka is sponsoring the forum with local advocacy and service providers. “We would like to open the door to de-stigmatizing mental health issues, talk about what services are available and what it is like to receive those services, as well…

Letter to the Editor: The Future of Jefferson-Houston

Charles Conway questions state Del. Rob Krupicka's leadership of the Jefferson-Houston transformation.

How harshly do readers have to express their heartfelt distress before getting The Patch’s attention? In an August 18, 2011 entry “Krupicka Believes Agenda Sets Him Apart, State senate candidate says creating local-state partnerships will be critical to future of Northern Virginia” Del Ray Patch editor Drew Hansen suggests the defeated candidate, now State Delegate former City Councilman Rob Krupicka, “believes it is this agenda, one he says has specific plans to boost education in the state and to create state-local partnerships… that sets him apart.” If true why did State Delegate formerly City Councilman Krupicka, who in the same article touts former ACPS School Board Chairman Sheryl Gorsuch’s “personal endorsement,” not have a well-…

The Alexandria City Council, except for our great Vice Mayor, Allison Silberberg, is definitely all run by the very entrenched 'good ole boy' and 'good old girl' network that has completely strangled Alexandria politics for years. Many Democrats that I know are completely turned off by our local elected officials, who, despite their good intentions, continuously embarrass us by their votes and …   more ›

Krupicka to Hold Three Legislative Wrap-Up Sessions

Del. Rob Krupicka kicked off his re-election campaign in March.

Del. Rob Krupicka (D-45th) is hosting three legislative wrap-up sessions in his district this month, giving residents an opportunity to ask questions and have a dialogue concerning the 2013 session of the General Assembly. Krupicka is hosting one session in each of the jursidictions included in the 45th District—Alexandria, Fairfax County and Arlington County. Each session is expected to last an hour. His legislative wrap-up schedule is as follows: Krupicka, a former Alexandria City Councilman and former member of the Virginia Board of Education, was elected delegate during a special election in September 2012. He kicked off his re-election campaign last month at Capitol City Brewing in Shirlington with endorsements from State Sen. Sharon …

State to Intervene in Jefferson-Houston School

Gov. Bob McDonnell signs legislation creating the Opportunity Educational Institution designed to aid the state's chronically failing schools.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell officially will allow the state to intervene in its chronically failing schools, such as Jefferson-Houston School in Alexandria. Virginia will establish a statewide Opportunity Educational Institution Board on July 1. Starting in the 2014-15 school year, the board will begin supervising the turnaround of schools that have been denied accreditation. “This game-changing legislation will ensure all students have the best opportunity to learn,” said a statement from the governor’s office. “If a school is chronically failing the institution will provide much needed intervention.” The legislation, which the governor amended before signing, follows a blueprint that he said has been successful in Tennessee and “clearly …

I think I've seen the Government study on Head-Start and don't agree that additional quality early childhood experiences would be ineffective for many of Alexandria's low-income children. There have been several longitudinal (how about that big word donnaandgary, not bad for a hillbilly huh!) studies confirming the effectiveness of quality pre-school experiences. Of course I'm suggesting things …   more ›

McAuliffe, Krupicka Discuss Sequestration in Alexandria

Shopkeepers say they are already feeling the squeeze related to federal cuts.

Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe (D) toured Del Ray shops and restaurants with Del. Rob Krupicka (D-45th) Friday to discuss sequestration with local business owners on the day the massive federal cuts went into effect. “It is ridiculous the parties cannot come together,” said McAuliffe, who took notes while talking with business owners and staff members at The Neighborhood Pharmacy of Del Ray, Executive Lock and Key Service, Artfully Chocolate and other businesses. “We have to come together and compromise. We just did that on transportation in Richmond. It is imperfect, but it was a move in the right direction. … [With sequestration] we have to get together. It’s not a partisan political issue. Everything is affected.” …

ACPS School Board Opposes Legislation in Letter to Governor

Alexandria City Public Schools' board sent a letter to Gov. Bob McDonnell saying proposed legislation would harm a local school.

Members of the Alexandria City School Board sent a letter to the state governor opposing legislation they say would usurp their power and adversely affect Jefferson-Houston School. Additionally, they requested a meeting in Richmond with Gov. Bob McDonnell to discuss the matter. The board late last week said while it welcomes the governor’s efforts to “improve education at Virginia public schools, including advancing educational achievement at the lowest performing school…we strongly oppose the Opportunity Educational Institution legislation.” The measure, which the Senate and House have adopted “will not produce the results we all want,” they wrote. State Del. Rob Krupicka (D-45), a former Alexandria city councilman and ex-member of the …

Considering the problems with Jefferson-Houston, I'm sure that neither Rob Krupicka, Tim Lovain or Justin Wilson would even dare think about sending their kids to go to school there. It's amazing, that all of a sudden, it's like someone has had an epiphany and just discovered how bad that the Alexandria City Public School system really is. And how odd that is, considering that City of Alexandria …   more ›

Chamber, City Officials to Speak in Support of Bill to Add State Financing to Potomac Yard Metro

Potomac Yard Metro Tax Increment Bill was introduced by Del. Rob Krupicka (D-45th).

Alexandria city officials and members of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce are scheduled to testify in a state committee hearing Monday in support of a bill to generate state funding for a Potomac Yard Metro station. The Potomac Yard Metro Tax Increment Bill (HB-1650), introduced by Del. Rob Krupicka (D-45th), provides that if an infill Metro station is constructed in a service district in a locality—in this case, the city of Alexandria—then the locality is entitled to retain the sales and use tax revenue generated in the district to pay bonds issued to construct the station. The bill would place a $1.25 million a year cap on the tax revenue retained. The state would support approximately 10 percent of the cost of the Metro construction …

I hope that this bill or something similar is passed. Potomac Yard would be a great place to live if it had a Metro station. If a Metro does not get built there, I foresee major traffic problems.   more ›

Del. Krupicka Introduces Bill Package Addressing Safety, Schools

The “Reduce Gun Danger Act, “Mental Health First Aid“ proposal and “Flexible School Security Act” are designed to curb gun violence and offer protection to schools and families.

Delegate Rob Krupicka (D-45) has introduced three bills designed to curb gun violence and protect Virginia families. The package of bills “offer a coordinated first step toward addressing the current problem with gun violence, particularly in our schools,” according to a statement from Krupicka. “They give new tools and flexibility to communities so that they can better protect themselves from dangerous situations,” he said. “I am looking forward to working with colleagues from both parties on these and other measures to keep our schools and communities safe.”  Bryan Porter, assistant commonwealth’s attorney for the City of Alexandria, said he supports the measures, calling the Reduce Gun Danger Act and Flexible School Security Act “common…
