Virginia Lawmakers Fail to Repeal Gay Marriage Ban

Legislators join activists, fellow lawmakers in Richmond to call for change.

By Amber Galaviz, Capital News Service   State officials joined gay rights activists at a press conference Thursday to discuss their disappointment in Virginia's failure to repeal the state's constitutional ban against same-sex marriage in this year's General Assembly session. “I believe that marriage is about loving, committed couples wanting to make lifelong promises to each other – take care of each other, be responsible for each other and support each other,” Del. Scott Surovell (D-Fairfax) said at the event at the General Assembly Building. “And I think that if anybody – gay, straight – wants to stand up in front of their family and friends and make that commitment to grow old together, it’s not for me, or the judge or the state to …

Actually, encouraging marriage among the homosexual demographic may *reduce* HIV/AIDS infections by reducing promiscuity within that demographic, possibly. Your children are not going to be turned gay by someone else: either they are or they aren't homosexual, already. So let people different than you be...that's what your children could be learning.   more ›

Same-Sex Marriage Not Likely Legal in Virginia Any Time Soon

Alexandria residents question the efficacy of the Marshall-Newman amendment to the Virginia Constitution.

Several Alexandrians expressed concern to state lawmakers over the Marshall-Newman amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman and questioned their legislators’ opinions on just how firmly this language was moored at a hearing Thursday at Alexandria City Hall. One such speaker, Old Town antique store owner Tom Osborne, who identified himself as active in the local chamber of commerce and a gay and lesbian Democratic club, said the amendment puts Northern Virginia “at a disadvantage.” “I know six couples who have moved out of Northern Virginia because of this,” Osborne told a panel comprised of Sens. Adam Ebbin (D-30th), Dick Saslaw (D-35th) and George Barker (D-39th) along with Dels. Rob Krupicka (D-45th) and Charniele …

Speak Out: Appeals Court Rules Defense of Marriage Act Unconstitutional

What do you think of the court's ruling?

A federal appeals court in Boston ruled Thursday that the Defense of Marriage Act — which defines marriage as between one man and one woman — is unconstitutional because it denies benefits to same-sex couples that heterosexual couples receive. The justices stayed the ruling pending an anticipated decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on this case or a similar case. The ruling applies to four New England states and Puerto Rico, which are covered by the circuit court’s jurisdiction, Bloomberg reported. According to the Huffington Post: "The court didn't rule on the law's more politically combustible provision, which said states without same-sex marriage cannot be forced to recognize gay unions performed in states where it's legal. It also wasn'…

Speak Out: Obama Backs Same-Sex Marriage

Will Obama's announcement hurt his chances to carry Virginia in 2012 as he did in 2008?

Facing pressure to take a stand, President Barack Obama on Wednesday said he supports same-sex marriage. In an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, Obama (D) described his “evolution” on the issue through talks with friends, and reflection on military personnel and members of his own staff who, he said, “are not able to commit themselves in a marriage,” adding that “at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.” Excerpts of the interview are scheduled to appear on ABC’s World News with Diane Sawyer on Wednesday evening. The full interview is scheduled to appear on ABC’s Good Morning America on Thursday morning. …
