City staff are recommending approval of a new restaurant at the foot of King Street that would include outdoor dining.
Old Town Alexandria businessman Jody Manor is proposing to open a restaurant on the Union Street waterfront at the corner of the unit block of King Street by the Torpedo Factory. The space is currently occupied by the City of Alexandria’s Old Historic Alexandria museum store. The restaurant — open breakfast through dinner — would have 76 indoor seats as well as 20 outdoor spots along King Street and 54 seats along the city marina plaza area. Wine and beer would be available for on- and off-premise sales. The store would have large-screen televisions behind the counter for entertainment and kiosks with Old Town marketing information. The Union Street Corridor Study, which stems from the Waterfront Small Area Plan, makes multiple short- and long-term recommendations to make the area more cohabitable for bikes, cars and pedestrians.
City Council will consider a report on the Union Street Corridor Study and its recommendations Saturday. City manager Rashad Young is recommending that the council approve the study’s short-term recommendations and approve the direction of the long-term recommendations of the plan, subject to further refinement. The plan stems from a recommendation in the Waterfront Small Area Plan that the city review vehicular, pedestrian and other impacts along the Union Street corridor, which is defined as from Pendleton Street to Jones Point Park. Artist Matthew Harwood's kinetic sculpture is on display through Dec. 3 in Oronoco Bay Park.
Residents and visitors may have recently been wowed by Moving Water, a piece of public art placed in Oronoco Bay Park in July. The artwork, by Torpedo Factory resident artist Matthew Harwood, is part of a proposed 1.5 mile “Art Walk” incorporated into the city’s new Waterfront Small Area Plan. The temporary installation is the first public artwork to debut as part of the Art Walk since approval of the plan. The walk is intended to help unify Alexandria’s fragmented waterfront parks. Art lovers and others need to act soon if they’d like to enjoy Harwood’s kinetic wind sculpture and park bench. The temporary exhibit is scheduled for removal Dec. 3. Annual walk aids commission members in assessing operational conditions and issues along the waterfront.
The Alexandria Waterfront Commission will hold its annual Waterfront Walk on Saturday, June 9 at 10 a.m. The walk will begin in Windmill Hill Park, 501 S. Union St., and continue north along the waterfront to Oronoco Bay Park. This annual event enables committee members to assess operational conditions and issues along the waterfront. The 21-member commission advises City Council and staff on issues related to Alexandria's riverside, and advice on implementation of the Waterfront Small Area Plan. The commission was established by City Council on April 14 and replaces the Waterfront Committee, which was founded in 1989.
