Whiz Kids: T.C. Williams High School Band

Band wins top honors at Festival Disney

T.C. Williams High School Band Last month, T.C. Williams High School Band traveled to Disney World and performed in Festival Disney. T.C.'s top band, Symphonic I, earned a Superior rating and took second place honors for the weekend, receiving a Disney Silver award. The combined Symphonic II and Symphonic 9 band also earned a Superior rating for their performance. The T.C. Jazz Band, combining the freshmen band and the upperclassmen band, earned an Excellent rating. What are the keys to the band’s success? Band Director Brian Thomas  says, “Hard work, dedication and private lessons.  Many of our students strive to music at the highest level possible and either take private lessons, or come in for help/enrichment after school.” What keeps …

Whiz Kids of the Week: Abegael Admete and Grace McCaffery

Two quick-thinking students come to the aid of a fellow student

This week we celebrate two quick-thinking Girl Scouts who came to the aid of a fellow student: Abegael Admete        Age: 11       Grade: 5          Grace McCaffery        Age: 10       Grade: 5          Blessed Sacrament School    On March 16, when a classmate fainted, Abegael and Grace didn’t miss a beat. In the hallway outside the school gym, when one of her classmates started to faint, Abegael quickly stood behind her classmate and eased him to the floor.  Then Abegael, with the assistance of classmate Grace, tried to revive the classmate who fainted.  Grace went to summon help from adults who then took charge of the situation.  Through their quick thinking and actions, Abegael and Grace both upheld the Girl Scout Promise to "help …

Jocelyn Zepeda         Age:  13         Grade:  8        School:  George Washington Middle School 2     Accomplishment: Highly motivated Jocelyn set a goal to get straight A’s, and she achieved it! Described as always smiling, friendly and easy to approach, Jocelyn stands out because of the level of her commitment to her goal and the effort she put into achieving it. No matter how difficult the material became or how intense the workload became, she never gave up. She never backed down. Not only did Jocelyn work hard in and outside of class, but she also helped her peers to achieve similar positive goals and helped them in classes when they were struggling.          Congratulations, Jocelyn! Whiz Kids of the Week: Students at George Mason Elementary School

Celebrating young achievers of Alexandria

Congratulations to the Whiz Kids of George Mason Elementary School, who received the Healthy School Award on Thursday, Mar. 10. The award, presented by the Marine Corps Marathon, was given in recognition of the school’s participation in the MCM Healthy Kids Fun Run on Oct. 30, 2010, in which 215 students participated! George Mason was one of the top five schools that garnered the most registrations, according to MCM Director Rick Nealis. The school also received a $1,000 award and along with healthy snacks from Sodexo, an event sponsor. The National Children’s Museum, another event sponsor, lead the educational and activity-drive program at the award assembly. Who say exercise doesn't pay off? Whiz Kids of the Week: American Girl Book Club at MacArthur Elementary

Young girls embracing American history and cultural through literature and play

If you know a girl between the ages of five and 13, then you are likely to be at least vaguely familiar with American Girl dolls. Many of the dolls have an accompanying series of six books that share stories about important events and relationships in the main character's life. The stories are set during historically significant periods in America and are infused with vivid details about daily life, including the food, clothing and transportation of that time. Felicity is a colonial girl growing up in Williamsburg, Va., in 1774. Addy is an African-American girl growing up in Civil War America in 1864. Josefina is a Hispanic girl growing up on a ranch in New Mexico in 1824. And, there are many, many more. The books and the dolls served as …

Whiz Kid of the Week: Malachi Galloway

Celebrating Alexandria's youth

School: Jefferson Houston Elementary School Grade: 2nd Age: 7 What makes Malachi a Whiz? He is an amazing kid that always goes above and beyond in his academics, in helping others and in his athletic pursuits.  Malachi, who was nominated by three people, including his mom, never ceases to amaze his mom with his accomplishments. Mom says he is already setting goals for himself and is being encouraged to grab everything that life has to offer by working and studying hard. And, it definitely shows in his grades ... he received all A's on his report card and has been on the honor roll several times. While Mom wasn't able to be with him to celebrate, she shared how happy she felt and how proud she is of him. A well-rounded kid, Malachi plays …

Malachi recently won his events at the Hershey's Track and Field Meet, hosted at T.C. Williams High School...He won the 50 yd dash as well as the Standing Long Jump. Being only 7, he was not eligible to move on. He participated in the Potomac Valley Track Club track meet on June 12, and won for his age group in the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter, and the long jump. We are quite proud of him.   more ›
