"...to find out what is best use of the site for all of Alexandria?" We can't because this is WMATA's property and the market will dictate what they will do with it. It wouldn't be fair to ask them to sell it for less than it is worth.
I think that you should focus your effort on lobbying the potential buyer(s). If one of them thinks that tour bus parking, a park or a public market is the best use of their newly acquired property -- meaning this will provide the best ROI -- then I am sure that is what they will build.
Common sense tells me that it will probably be condos or high-end townhouses. Welcome to a neighborhood that is desirable to live in.

ReplyYes, yes and yes!
If you have never been to Union Market in DC (Florida Ave and 5th St NE) I recommend that you take a trip there soon. My wife and I thought that such a facility on the water would do wonders for getting both locals and tourists to spend time at the waterfront. I'm suggesting in the long term redevelopment plan that more small eateries and watering holes be offered with waterside views and seating. Specifically places that encourage small bites and a couple of drinks with high enough churn that everyone has a chance to enjoy the food, drink and views.

ReplyWow. Good luck with all of that traffic heading south on Union, and then right onto Duke (because you can't turn at Prince) and then onto Lee st. (narrow street) before they get confused and turn right onto King only to do it all over again. Or they can go around behind Virtue and end up having to make a right hand turn, which is the turn they wanted to make all along.
How about a traffic light with crosswalks and walk/don't walk signals?

So, Scot, did someone redraw the map and put VA into the "North"? If so, someone ought to tell the U.S. Census Bureau.

As the article states, " Fellow winners are Memphis, Tenn., Charleston, S.C., Savannah, Ga., Baton Rouge, La., Jackson, Miss., Austin, Texas, and Dallas."
There were multiple categories in the survey based on geographic region.

Really? No comments on this story yet? Did all of the preservationists move on to something else?

ReplyI appreciate that Patch is trying to pass on important info but I don't visit Patch to get national news. I visit it because of the hyper local news for my city and its neighborhoods. Hopefully this type of story here isn't going to become the trend for Patch.
