Former Generous George's to House Two New Restaurants

Long-time Alexandria restaurant Generous George’s tied its last balloon figure and downed its final fish-bowl sized glass of pink lemonade in 2009, but here comes Ginny’s and the Esquire Dog.

Family-friendly Generous George’s operated for 33 years before it shut down. In  its place, the new building lessee is proposing Ginny’s with a take-out sidekick. The restaurant is described as a “high-end casual establishment emphasizing American cuisine with southern flavors” and also in the building would be the take-out only Esquire Dog.

George’s at 3000 Duke St. was allotted 255 seats for diners and the new restaurateur is asking for a reduction to offer about 170 seats. It offers 53 parking spaces, according to the application submitted to the city. Proposed hours are 5 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, til 1 a.m on Friday and 6 a.m. through 1 a.m. on Saturday, 7 a.m. through 11 p.m. on Sunday.

The building built in 1940 was listed in 2008 as a foreclosure sale with a price of $1.5 million, according to the MRIS real estate database. It was acquired by Branch Banking and Trust in April 2011. The city has assessed the property as worth $780,507 in 2011, according to the city’s real estate database.

Ginny’s restaurant is a subsidiary of My Husband Cooks Hospitality Group of King Street in Old Town Alexandria. Ginny’s and the Esquire Dog are its first ventures, according to the group’s application with the city.
